Sholapith Art, Peacock
Globally recognized art form that uses the soft, porous core of the Shola stem to create delicate decorative items like statuettes and sculptures. The Shola plant, found in waterlogged areas, is known for its water-resistant properties and ability to expand and contract with temperature changes. Originating from the dried stems of mangrove weeds, Shola crafting has a rich tradition in Bengal, where the spongy material is carved into festival decorations. Craftsmen from Bengal, Assam, and Orissa spend months on each piece, showcasing their dedication and skill. Ashish Malakar, award winning Sholapith artist and Nandita Palchoudhuri collaborate to produce ethereal pieces.
